TOTARA VERSUS JARRAH FOR PILES.
(by telegraph.) Auckland, July 13. A farther illustration of the superiority of New Zealand totara timber over that of Australian jarrah. for piles is given by specimens of each on view at the Harbor Board office here. A portion of a jarrah pile, which had been used at Mahurangi wharf for six years, is almost entirely eaten away by worms, etc. ; there is also shown a block of totara, which was in Queen-street wharf for 15 years, and is quite as good as when first put under water. The latter has been cut open, and the heart of the timber shows no sign of decay.
