POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.

(from oera "special correspondent)

Wellington, June 22.

The'division upon the want of confidence motion will probably be taken on Thursday next, but of course, this will greatly depend upon whether the'smaller guns of the House will 3how a desire to speak. If they do so, and many no doubt will have grievances to bring forward, the debate may be still further prolonged. •The supporters of the Ministry calculate upon having a majority of at least ten, but of this I have great doubts. The division will I think- be much closer, though the Ministry will certainly have a majority. The Government are now preparing a Bill to amend the Property Assessment and Property Tax Acts, to give effect to the promised modifications. The measure will probably, be introdnced this week, and it is not at all unlikely that the opportunity will be seized for making an effort at any rate to obtain the exemption of machinery and to include shipping. The Marriage with the Deceased Wife's Sister Bill'has passed through the Legislative Council by a majority of four. It is considered certain that it will pass the Lower House,

Mr. Reeves has given notice that he will introduce the Marriage with the Deceased Husband's Brother Bill. Mr. Ballance will move in Committee the reduction of the Beer Tax to threepence, and says he has promises pf support which render success certain. It is thought that' the Government will accept the situation, although they will do so very reluctantly. ■The harbor light for Oamaru, selected by the Waitaki members, was displayed last night, and-proved most brilliant.
