WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following is the conclusion of our report of yesterday's meeting of the County Council It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Duncan, to write to the Commissioner of Railways asking him to grant a siding at Peebles, on the Duntroon railway line, pointing out that the cost would be trifling, while the siding would be of great convenience to the settlers in the vicinity. It was also decided to ask that cattle-yards might be erected on the northern line at Pukeuri Point, and on the south line at Herbert.

Mr. Murcott having called attention to the necessity for procuring a suitable site for County Chambers, the Chairman undertook to represent the matter in the proper quarter. A long report upon a variety of matters was read from the Engineers (Messrs. Barr and Oliver). It was resolved, in connection with one matter, that the Otepopo Road Board should build the Bowall Creek Bridge at a cost not exceeding L 340, and that the Waitaki County Council contribute half the cost.

The report of the Inspector was read, and the several suggestions dealt with as follow :

(1) Hampden Riding—that notice be given to the contractors for surface work that unless the contract be carried out according to specifications, the Council will employ labor at the contractors'expense; (2) Otepopo Riding—that tenders be called for seven chains at Maheno road, Maheno to Kakanui, forming and gravelling ; also, for not more than 300 cubic yards of gravel between Graham's and Maheno ; (3) Otekaike Riding—that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications, and that tenders be called for constructing a new footbridge at Livingstone; also, that tenders be called for forming and gravelling (a) 40 to 50 chains between Doctor's and Otekaike Creeks, and (h) 20 to 30 chains between Otekaike Qreek and the White Rocka.

Tenders were opened for various works, and the following accepted : —Contract No. 98, erection of a foot-bridge over the Maerewhenua River, Duntroon to Livingstone, Mr. W. A. Barnes, L 199 3s Id ; contract No. 99, formation, metalling, or gravelling part qf the Beach Road in the Kakanui Riding, Messrs. Biggar and Robertson, Ll5B, 9s, for gravelling; contract No. 100, formation, metalling, or gravelling part of the. Beach Road in the Kakanui Riding, Messrs. Biggar and Robertson, L33116s 10d, for gravelling; contract No. 101, repairing the Kakaho Bridge, Mr. A. C. Weir, L3215s 8d; contract 102, erection of, culverts and the formation and grayeljii}g of a portion of the road in biock 4, Otepopo survey district, Mr. J. Counihan, L 74 15s.
