FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE NGAPARA RAILWAY.
An accident, rasulting in the instantaneous ' death of a man named Thomas Guy, occurred on tho Ngapara railway last evening at' 'Windsor. On the arrival |of the train at the Windsor platform, the 'engine was uncoupled andtakert into tho siding to couple on some additional trlicks. :On coming out of the sidings and proceeding a 'little further • along the line, tho engine struck the body of the man, which was apparently lying across the rails, and the concussion was sufficient to bring the train to a standstill; the engine at the time of the accident being moving very The body was'almost severed in two across the shoulders and chest by one of tho wheels passing over it. The deceased was employed on the Livingstone, railway, and the body was recognised by his brother, also an employtf on the Livingstone line. He was a native of Londonderry, Ireland, and was about 24 years-o£ age: How he came upon the line is known; for the accident happened aboiit 20 yards; on the Oamaru sido of tho crossing," •so that, 'twere is no reason .to suppose that the accident was' owing tb the crossing being unguarded. That he was either! asleep in a state of intoxication or under the influence of a fit is shown by the fact that he raised no cry of alarm on the engine approaching. An inquest was being held at Windsor this afternoon..
