(reuter's telegram per press association.) Melbourne, May 10. The Hon. Mr. Service formally opened the new Exchange to-day, there were 1000 persons present at the ceremony. The Irish Relief Fund has now closed, the total amount subscribed being L 31,675, The Meat Company formed in England has been promoted by Messrs. M'lll wraith, M'Eachern and Co. Messrs. Sloanes and Co., have been appointed agents for Melbourne and Sydney. Cooktown, May 10. ■He E. and A. M. steamship Somerset, with the Torres Straits mail, arrived here on Saturday from Singapore. She brings the following items of Eastern news:—

"War is increasingly imminent between Russia and China, both of which countries are in a disturbed condition, prejudicial to trade. At the Northern Ports the Chinese Government are making warlike'preparations, and pushing forward their arming, whilst Russia has been busily engaged placing an army on the Kuldja frontier. Adelaide, May 12.

Three passengers by the Orient, which arrived here yesterday, committed suicide on the voyage from Plymouth.
