At an inquest on the fire at the Commercial Hotel a verdict was returned that the building was burnt down under very suspicious circumstances, but that evidence of the origin of the fire does not appear to the jury. Jn the Police Court to-day, Charles Alexander Martin was charged with indecently assaulting Rachael Fletcher. The case was adjourned in consequence of the absence of witnesses, and bail was allowed. Henry Richardson, James Corbett, Richard James Feltus, arjd Leonard Adapts charged, under the Yagrant Act by playing with a totalisatar at a game of chance on the Jjlerslie raoeoourse. The totalisator was produced in Court. The charge against Feltus was withdrawn, as he was engaged as clerk. Francis Short, hairdresser, deposed that he paid 10s for a ticket on King •Quail, and that there were three other tickets. He went to watch King Quail won, when he returned to the totalisator the proprietor offered him a fourteenth share, dispute ensued. Ophe proprietor said someone had altered the numbers. He eventually got his Ll2. William Booth, bookmaker, corroborated his statement. William Robert Churton saw only four up when the race was run.
