The Oamaru Mail. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1880.
We last night gave some information rf"uitlin" tile new electoral law? of the Colony. = "We now give some further information, in order that our readers niav perfectly understand the course prescribed for their adoption as the means of securing the privileges of voters. Claims to have names inserted in the Electoral Roll may be sent in to the Clerk of the Magistrate's Court of this electoral district, from whom blank forms may be obtained on application: Fifteen days after the application is sent to the Registrar—provided that, after investigation, he is satisfied that the claimant is entitled to vote the name of the applicant is placed on the roll. If he is not satisfied that the application is valid, he must within the above-mentioned period notify the claimant what proof he requiies, and, if the enquiry results favorably to the applicant, his name is forthwith added to the roll. If the necessary proof is not afforded within ten days, and if the claim is not withdrawn, the Registrar may apply to a Resident Magistrate or Justice of the Peace for a summons, and have the case heard by a Resident Magistrate, before whom the Registrar and claimant, or his agent, or his solicitor must appear. The claimant would have to prove the particulars, and after hearing the case the Resident Magistrate would either order his name to be placed on the roll or not, accoiding to the evidence. Any person whose name is on any roll by virtue of j a residence qualification, may, if he should remove to another district, after the expiration of one month from the time of his removal, have his name transferred to the roll of that district. For this purpose it is necessary for him to make a written application to the Registrar of the district which he has lefTfor a certificate that his name is on the roll of that district. Electoral rolls are to be altered as occasion may require. Four months after a roll is formed it must be printed, and, as soon as 100 new names are added to it it may be re-printed, if a year should have elapsed since the previous printing j 01 a supplementary roll may be issued. It is desirable that applicants should, if their names are already on the roll of the district, inform the Registrar of the fact. This precaution would save time, and reduce to a minimum the possibility of the repetition of names. Those who are desirous that their names should appear on the new roll should send in their claims at once.
