LATEST HOME AND FOREIGN NEWS. (JRKUTJSR : S TELEGRAM, PBR PRESS ASSOCIATION). • JjOKCQN, April 5. The election for Middlesex took place to-day, and resulted in tlie return of the two former members—Lord George Hamilton and Mr. E, G, Cooper. Mr. Herbert Gladstone, a son of the ex-Premier, who contested the election, was defeated. The Hon. Mr. Gladstone haa been elected for Midlothian by a large majority. Three per cent, consols, 9S§. ; Brandy, 10s 6d. ; In the elections now proceeding, the net Liberal gain is 62, Dublin returns one Home Ruler and one Liberal. The Hon. R. Lowe has been re-elected for London University. The Times, in a leading article, says it has reason to believe that the Ministry will resign before Parliament meets. It is announced that Sadrali has been appointed sovereign ruler at Candahar, under British protection. ; DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (reutjsr's telegram per press association.) Sydney, April 6. ; The Australian Jockey Club Plate was run to-day, and resulted as follows: Caspian, 1 ; Pearn, 2 ; Martindale, 3 ; seven started. Caspian won by a length. Time, 5 min. 38 2-10 th sees. April 7.
