VOLUNTEERS.
We understand that the officer cam>manding this Volunteer district is; doing a)l in his power to make the tvip to.Christchurch a pleasant one to our Volunteers,, and to make arrangements as complete as; possible. Drill Instructor P'Pherson was, deputed from Oamaru to proceed tot Christchurch to arrange for quarters. On arriving at Christchurch, and reporting,' his business, he was received with great courtesy by Major Lean and Captain® Warner and Hawkes, with whose guidance the best quarters in Christchurch were secured. Moreover, all the Volunteers in North Otago will be under one roof, and will be supplied with new bedding and victuals at an hotel conveniently situated.. The building to be appropriated for our Volunteers is central, it being the old Telegraph Office, situated in Cathedralsquare, and which is being put in complete order for the purpose. At the inspections of the Otepopo and Hampden Companies this week, votes of thanks wem passed to. , the gentlemen of the Christchurch review for the courtesy shown to. their Sergeant-Major, wli!ile a compliment was paid that officer for his taot'in having: effected the Arrangements entrusted to him. The following appointments have. been made in connection with the battalion* viz., Major Lean in command, MajorSumpter (senior major), Captain Diehl (junior major and adjutant), and Staff" Sergeant M'Pherson to be battalion sergeant-major. . Notwithstanding that appearances were such that we felt it toi be our duty to write somewhat strongly of the arrangements that were being mades for the reception of visiting Volunteers-, we feel it to be due to the Christchiareii Volunteer authorities to say that they have at last developed a scheme that gives every promise of being productive of success to the review and comfort to the Volunteers, if the Volunteers of other districts have been as fortunate as that of this district. There is every reason to, believe that the trip to Christchurch willj prove most enjoyable to the Volunteer of this district, especially to those to, whom opportunities are seldom afforded of taking a holiday, and of seeisg parts of? the Colony beyond their own districts.. The Hampden company was inspected by the Drill,'lnstructor on Wednesday last, in the absence of the officer in charge of the distriot. The men appeared in their new uniforms, which came to hand by the last mail, and have now earned the designation of " The Scarlet Bat* talion."
