Studholme, an action to. recover LlOQlXdatnageaiotlosaes plaintlfiT tHe destruction ofi his property by a large fire at Waimate on^ovember,,ls t lS7S,..which, fire,"it is alleged, wascauaediay the negligence objE :",the' dfefeniiantja-; &iryaints, was commenced in the Supreme Court-to-dry. _ The defendant- pleads, that the plaintiff is not possessed of the land in respect to which he claims ; and, further, that he is not guilty of the grievances urged against him. The case is likely to last the whole of the week. : March 16.
Butler has been remanded till Monday. Besides the • charges of murder and presenting a loaded revolver at Constable Townsend's head, he will be charged with burglary at Mr. Stamper's house. This place was found to be on fire under pipious circumstances early on Saturday morning, and some of property yas found on when arrested. Joseph Jones has been arrested for arson at North-East Harbor.

CHRISTCRURCH. March 15. , , At the Police Court this morning, a man named James Brown was charged with cruelty to animals. It was proved that he had left a couple of horses harnessed to a cart standing out all night in a storm of rain, and as it was not the first time he had done this kind of thing, the Magistrate sent him to gaol for $ fortnight, without the option of a fine. The City Counoil last night passed a resolution asking the ratepayers sanction to; a loan of LSOOO for the erection of Municipal offices and a Mayor's court. iOn Saturday night a man standing at the edge of the Kaiapoi railway platform was nearly caught by an approaching train. The stationmaster seeing the danger in which the man §tp,os dragged him back, not a in.pinfuit taa soon. In another he would have been drawn oil to the line.
The Review Committee have received notifications to date of the intentions of fourteen hundred visitors being present at the Easter Review.
A number of persons are endeavoring to} form a Naval Brigade in Christchurch. :On Sunday a fire broke out in the tussocks at Rakaia and spread over a large portion of the township extension, de* stroying several' of gorse' fencing. The Lincolnshire delegates arrived from Hawera last night, IVJr. Grant is suffering from a severe attack of sciatica, and can scarcely walk. They are the guests of Mr. Caverhill. It is supposed' that they will leave for Auckland to-day in the steamer Rangatira, which'will be detained so as to enable Mr. Foster to see something of the district/ 7 :
