In a manifesto by Lord Hartington, he attributes the loyalty of the Colonie's to autonomy conferred by the Liberals. He opposes Home Rule, and promises reform in the franchise, local government, and land laws. The Liberals will uphold the power and integrity of the Empire, and will avoid a policy likely to cause disquiet, or make needless annexation of territory. Sir Stafford Jforthcote has written a letter, and trusts that the new Parliament will be wholly devoted to legislation of domestic affairs. The Hon. W. E. Gladstone has delivered an address, and follows the lines of Lord Hartington. He condemned the foreign policy of Earl Beaconsfield. March 11. .A petition having been presented to the: Governor, praying for the commutation of the sentence of death passed iipan. Joseph Wells, found guilty of shooting William Murphy, with intent to nrarder, in connection with the sticking up of the National Bank at Connamulla in January last, His Excellency has had the. case tinder consideration, but has refused to commute j the sentence of death. Wells will be I hanged on Wednesday next,
