NGAPARA.
(FROM OUR own CORRESPONDENT.) • • ' March 1. In a short memo, sent you on Friday last I stated that an inquest on the body of the unfortunate man Geerin was to be held on Saturday, but afterwards official notification was received that an inquest, was not deemed necessary ; under the circumstances. This is giving rise to no little comment among the residents. The body was taken to Georgetown on Saturday and buried at the expense of the Goyemment. One sad feature in the case is that the deceased man has a brother (?) working only about three miles away, who,®when informed of the sad incident, said it was no more than he had expectedf&r some time, and, beyond this, took no further notice. , He did not even come into the township to see him prior to his removal for burial. Surely such conduct cannot be too strongly commented upon. The Ngapara Caledonian Sports Committee's concert was to have been held on. Friday evening last, but owing to the unfortunate occurrence mentioned above it was postponed till Friday, X2th March, the reason of this being that the body had been placed in the stable direotly under the room used for danoing. Had it not been for this, I have every reason to believe .that the affair would have been a grand success, and I am afraid that, being once disappointed, we shall not get the people to muster in such force again without some little trouble. At a meeting of the School Committee, held on Wednesday evening last, votes were passed in favor of Messrs. Shrimski, Fulton, and Johnston as members of the Education: Board. The selection for the new Committee tatkes place on the 6th inst.and is expected to b§ attended. One or two of our farmers have finished cutting, but the majority of them are
nothing like done yrafc. I notice that a threshing machine hps started work on Mr. Balfour's farm, and the yield is rereporfced to be turning out very good. • We have had velry fine weather all through the harvest until this last two or three days, when fogs, and what is popularly known as Scotch mists, have prevailed to some ex tent,' but have done no damage.
