At the wool auctions to-day 8800 bales have been catalogued. There was a firm and active demand. _ ; In the House of iords an important discussion took place on the Afghanistan question. The Duke of Argyle; again attacked the policy of the Government. The Premier replied, defending the course pursued, and statins? that Russia sought to embarrass England in Asia. : -The duty of the Government was, therefore, to secure the gates of India, and until such had been achieved it was impossible to "retire from Afghanistan, as anarchy prevailed in the country. The present series of wool auctions to -date show the following increases in the prices of wool as compared with the last auction sales :—Greasy, to 2d. ; scoured, 2d.; fleece, l^d. February 21. At to-day's wool sales, 9900 bales were offered, and prices firmly maintained. : Berlin, February 21.

The Purse was won by Shepherdess, and the Plate by Debonnaird. Wool is firm at opening rates. There has been an advance in fleece and greasy of lgd, scoured 2d, and cross-bred 2d. Sailed —Hero, for Auckland, Three prisoners effected their-escape from the Cassilisgaol yesterday by removing a sash in the wall. They secured the police horses, and got clear away. The police are now in pursuit.
