MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present —His Worship the- Mayor," Councillors Mainland, Garland, Smith, Roberts, Townsend, Otterson, and Headland.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. . The gaoler wrote applying for stone for the prisoners to break, and the matter was ordered to be attended to, the Engineer being instructed to keep the gaol supplied. Messrs. Proberfc and Barker, hair- ; dressers, were given permission "to erect a barber's pole in front of their premises. ' Mr. Win. Glass, Hull-street, wrote : " As I have 110 road to my house (section 23, block 42,), I hope you will form a road, so tha tl caD get a dray to my gate." —The Kngineer w'as • instructed to have the work done by the daymen. Mr. Patrick Ford wrote, calling the attention of the Council to the fact that since his' accident by being buried in the tunnel ,for which -lie-waaa contractor in . July. last,. Mr. J. .1 ohnston wrote forwarding the plans and specifications in connection with the new White Hart Hotel, and the plans and. specifications were approved, and permission given, to erect' the Building. The Reserves Committee reported that they could see no objection to the alteration of the proposed . road-line to the .Municipal. Council, as suggested, by. the Railway 'Engineer. ""'The" r^pot't 1 'was adopted, and ftie Clerk-'instructed to : inform Mr. ; -Lowe that tjie Council had no objection to the alteration. The Waterworks Committee reported that, in consequence of the discovery of defect? Tn "the concrete'work, at' tha-valve tower, owing .to the wanfc or proper inspection by Inspector : "Kirby,' they had instructed? the Engineer; tp suspend;him for one month, and to place Mr. Hamilton in charge of the concrete work. Some discussion took place upon the matter, during which
Councillor Garland said the matter was one of very great importance, and he thought the Council should go further than suspend the Inspector. The Mayor was certainly of opinion that the Council should haye some further
evidence before it before coming to any decision upon the matter. the neglect of the inspector"was"fully met by him for a month. j A letter was read from Mr. J. Burnett, Assistant Engineer of Railways, asking for permission to cut a drain inside the garden fence. The matter was referred tb the Public Works Committee, with power to act. I A number of objections to the assessment were laid upon the table, and the Council decided that they should be defended by the assessor. It was decided that tenders should be called for the supply of kerosene, and the Council rose.
