A special meeting of the School Committee was held last evening for the purpose of further considering the appointment of a matron to the High School. There were present —Messrs. Fleming (Chairman), Bee, Smith, Forrester, Mollison, Mitchell, Stevenson. Peattie (Rector of the High School), and Hardy (Secretary). : A report from the Chairman and the Rector, who had proceeded: to Dnncdin to report upon the qualifications of the candidates, and on the motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Forrester, it was decided to. adopt the report,' arid the Secretary -whs directed to write to the Education. Board requesting that fresh applications should be called for, and suggesting that wider publicity should be given to the advertisement, It was urged that the position of matron was -a most important one, and that no effort should be spared to secure a thoroughly competent lady, and it was suggested that the Board should advertise in Melbourne and other places outside of Otago. A vote of thinks was -accorded ■to Messrs. Fleming and Peattie for the tiouble they had taken in reporting upon the qualifications of the candidates. It was brought, under the notice of the Committee that the dividing; fence between the High School and the police reserve encroached so.nc yards iipon the grounds of the -former, find the Secretary was requested to write to the Board of Education asking for a copy of the plan of the ground, with a view to having the matter rectified. Some other matters were discussed, and the Committee rose.. !
A trotting match took place last evening between Mr, M. Taylor's bay gelding Tommy and Mr. W. M Southan's black mare Nelly. The match wasforLlOa=side,andthedistance was from the race-course gate to the Ndrth Otago Hotel, about 2? miles, Nelly jvas driven in harness by Mr. Soutlian, ;a light bucgy being secured for the purpose, while Tommy was riilden by Mr. Taylor personally, and had no light weight "to carry.. Mr. Taylor riding over 14 stone. Mr. Shalders acted as starter, and sent the competitors to a fair start, Nelly getting a slight advantage. . Tommy won by some, considerable distance, Mr. Taylor being loudly cheered by about 300 people who had gathered to witness the finish. The time was a little over eight minutes. r '
