A special meeting of the School Committee was held last evening for the purpose of further considering the appointment of a matron to the High School. There were present —Messrs. Fleming (Chairman), Bee, Smith, Forrester, Mollison, Mitchell, Stevenson. Board requesting that fresh applications should be called for, and suggesting that wider publicity should be given to the advertisement, It was urged that the position of matron was -a most important one, and that no effort should be spared to secure a thoroughly competent lady, and it was suggested that the Board should advertise in Melbourne and other places outside of Otago. A vote of thinks was -accorded ■to Messrs. Fleming and Peattie for the tiouble they had taken in reporting upon the qualifications of the candidates. It was brought, under the notice of the Committee that the dividing; fence between the High School and the police reserve encroached so.nc yards iipon the grounds of the -former, find the Secretary was requested to write to the Board of Education asking for a copy of the plan of the ground, with a view to having the matter rectified. A trotting match took place last evening between Mr, M. Taylor's bay gelding Tommy and Mr. W. M Southan's black mare Nelly.
