PROVISION FOR EDUCATION IN OTAGO.
The members of the Education Board waited on Mr. Rolleston yesterday, to bring before him the subject of the Boards funds. The sum of L 176,000 had been voted by Parliament for sqliqql buildings, but of this Otago had received amy L 21,500. Their estimates for the year showed that L 43,372 was required for buildings, and as the attendance at the schools entitled them to a large sum beyond what they had received, the deputation hoped to receive from the Minister an assurance that such would be. forthcoming. Mr. Rolleston replied that the returns from Otago and other districts had not yet come in, and until they were received he could not say what Otago would receive, but Government meant tfl every justice in distributing the Vote, L125,00Q iiad been expended, and ths ve* maining LqI.OOQ was intended to he allotted to the places where it was ahawu chat there were pressing wants. Of courao, this amount did not apply to tlie present year. He hoped to be able to remit this to different destinations within a few weeks' time. At present an impression prevailed that Boards in the South wer§ in a better position than the ones, but that AYQijld bo looked into. shq Chairman, mentioned' the subjeot of ft .-system of retiring allowances for superannuated teachers. Mr. Rolleston promised that the Government would not lose sight of the matter.
