It is stated that the Home Rulers of Mayo, Ireland, intend to select Davitt and Brennan, now under committal for using seditious, language at an anti-rent meeting, as candidates for the representation of Mayo in Parliament, on condition that they abstain from attending the sittings of the House of Commons. Although suggestions that England should, hand Herat over to the care of Persia are being renewed by the Press, nothing positive is yet known as to the intentions of the British Government in the matter. (special to press association.) London, January 28. The health of Earl Salisbury has not yet improved. The ITagus committed a raid in the gardens of Cachar, and killed the managers. Davitt and other Irish agitatorshave been nominated for seats in Parliament. Continued outrages are reported. Mahomed Jan is dead, but still further attacks are reported. General Roberts has re-victualled his depots. /. January 30. A number of Socialists have been arrested at Barcelona. Lord Salisbury is recovering from his indisposition. The Afghan tribes demand Yakoob Khan's reinstatement as a condition of peace. An advance upon Herat will take place in March.
(SPECIAL TO THE MELBOURNE AGE.) . London, January 20. There have beon Socialistic outbreaks at Barcelona. Many persons liave been arrested. A body of armed Kagars attacked the plains of Cachar, Assam, pillaging the tea plantations, and killing and wounding several managers. The latest news from Afghanistan states that early hostilities are expected. General Roberts has been revictualling hiil dep&ts, and has strengthened his lines of: communication. It is reported that Mahommed Jan died from his recent wounds. The insurgents demand the re-instatement of Yakoob Khan on condition of peace. The British force march on EJeratin. The special meeting of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, which was to have been held, to-day to consider a proposition by the directors for the repeal of the nineteenth bye-law—allowing voting by proxy iri the election of directors—and other matters, has been ■ postponed till after the'annual meeting of the society, which will bp held in April next. , Sailed —City of Sydney, for Auckland.
