ANNUAL ELECTIONS OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

OAMARU. The annual statutory meeting of householders for the election of a School Committee was held at the High School last evening, and, despite the wretched weather, was very fairly attended. Mr. N. Fleming was voted to the chair, and read the authority fixing the meeting. The Secretary (Mr. J. Hardy) then read the annual report, as r already published by us, and the followmgfb'alance-sheet : balance-sheet.

On the motion of Mr. J. Bee, seconded by Mr. T. Forrester, the report and balance-sheet were adopted, Mr. Forrester remarking that it was evident that the meeting was highly pleased with the progress made by the Committee, and particularly mentioned the fact of the North School having been put upon a satisfactory f qoting. The meeting then proceeded to the election of a Committee, and 13 gentlemen were proposed, two of whom declined to act. On Mr. Montagu expressing his determination not to egek re-election, the chairman sti-it] thjs was a, matter for very great regret, as Mr. Montagu had proved himself one of the very be3t members of the Committee ; he had been one of the most energetic members and one of the most regular attendants at the meetings. Messrs. Hislop arid Peattie having been chosen scrutineers,' the ballot papers were handed in "with the result that the following gentlemen were elected: — Messrs. T." Forrester, 25; N. Fleming, 24 ; W. J. Smith, 22 ; J. Mitchell, 13 ; Stevenson, 10 j J. Bee, 10 j K. Mollison, 10. The Chairman then read a notice fixing the first meeting of the Committee to be held at the High School on Friday, 30th inst., .at half-past seven o'clock. The Chairman said" there was one matter not referred to in the report which he thought should be brought under the notice of the meeting. It'would be remembered that the Committee had been forced, through the Education Board declining to provide funds for their payment, to (iispense with. the services of the music master and drill instructor. Mr. Brownlee being engaged throughout the day, could not be expected to give his time ; but Mr, M'Phersqn had gome manfully forward and said the children should not'lose theip instruction in drill. He (the speaker) thought that Mr. M'Pherson was entitled tp a hearty vote of thanks for giving so muph of his time to the instruction of the scholars, and lie would therefore propose a hearty vote of tliauks to Mr. M'Pherson. The motion was carried by acclamation, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings. /, . j
