INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

[BY TELEGRAPH.] Dunedin, January 10. The seventeenth interprovincial cricket match commenced on the Caledonian Ground at noon to-day. The weather was beautiful at the start, but it is now windy and rain is There was only a small attendance. Ashby, winning' the toss, elected to take advantage of the fine wicket, and sent in Hartland and Alpe to the bowling of Paramor and M'Lennan. Fowler joined Alpe, but the latter, after adding three singles to his score, was beautifully caught in the slips by Paramor off M'Lennan, 2—10—21. Ashby, the Canterbury captain, filled the vacancy, but his first ball he drove back into the hands of M'Lennan, who dropped it like a hot potato. Ashby signified his thanks by treating both bowlers to heavy punishment, lifting M'Lennan out of bounds for 4. On 30 being registered upon the board, Conway relieved M'Lennan, but Ashby, opening his shoulders, treated Paramor to a couple of skiers, one on-drive going high out of bounds. When 57 appeared on the telegraph, Cooke, a left-handed bowler, relieved Paramor. These changes djd not prove effectual, 70 soon appearing on the Board. At 1.30 the score stood at 78, Ashby making 41, and J. Fowler 16. Both are not out, The team then adjourned for lunch. On resuming, Ashby and J. Fowler continued scoring freely. At three o'clock Ashby, after playing a grand innings, skied one from Conway off his hands, and the ball being held, the Canterbury captain retired. 117—3—59. Ashby's score comprised three 4's, eight 3's, six 2's, and the rest singles. J. Fowler's score stands at 35. Baker added 5 to the score, when he was given out 1 b w, the board showing 122—4—5.
