MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

; The fortnightly meeting of the Council took place last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Messrs. Smith, Garland, Humphrey, Headland, Roberts, Mainland, and Townsend.

Your Committee, having been informed by the engineer that Mr. 1 Ross has consented to allow the . Council to go on with the excavation of the race through his property, on condition that the race be fenced in, and the amount of compensation be paid l}im when m funds, have ingtruoted thej engineer to call for for the excavation of the 21| chains, to be paid by voucher. It was resolved that the tenders for finishing the Italian tunnel be referred to

the Waterworks Committee and the Engineer, with power to act. . Messrs. Fraser and Oo.'s tender of L 35 for fitting and erecting pipes and valves in the valve tower was accepted. The question of repairing and painting the gas lamps was left to the Gas Committee, with power to act. v After some discussion, a passed, upon the motion Headland, to the effect that as' regards the account for the pipe tester, the Council} 'while agreeing to pay for it, call the Engineer's attention to the fact that it is. quite contrary to the custom of the" Council to give out any work'for more than L2O without calling for tenders for. the same.
