(rr.oyt ovv. own ooi:uK.sroxnKNTS.) CHKISTCHURCH. December 27. On Christinas Day, as Dugald Cameron, who was with a picnic party, was bathing in Lake Ellesmere, he suddenly ceased swimming. Ho was taken out directly, but was found to be dead. . Thore were uo signs of cramp or drowning. The cause is believed to have been heart disease. The day before the deceased had been presented with n complete sot of purple regalia by the Soutlibridge Lodge of Oddfellows in recognition of his services to the Lodge. Decern > or 20. Fourteen men were this morning charged before a very full Bench with riot and assault on the 27th. On the application of Superintendent Broham the}* were all remanded till the 2nd of January. The street leading from the Court to the Police Depot was lined with an immense crowd of spectators. Arrived —Barque South Esk, with a I.tnic number of passengers from London, 92 days out. At the annual sports on Boxing Day, held at Eakaia, Mr. Lake, jun., who was riding a hack race, was thrown, and died yesterday. The town is very quiet. The special constables assembled at 8 p.m. last evening, but at 10 p.m. they were dismissed. They meet again on Wednesday evening.
