PUKEURI DISTRICT SCHOOL.
The examination of this school took place on the 23rd inst., and was conducted by the teachers, Mr. Wallace and Miss Watson. Mrs. Harrison and Miss Neilson awarded the prizes in the industrial department, and the School Committee awarded the prizes in the writing department. The School Committee, at their meeting held for fixing the date of the examination, resolved, on account of the number of pupils and the want of room, not to invite any of the parents on this occasion. The programme began and ■closed by the singing of a few songs Ly the whole of the scholars (eighty-nine being present). At the close of the day's proceedings, the Secretary of the School Committee, Mr. Goodall, addressed the children, and praised them for the manner in which they acquitted themselves. Mr. Duncan delivered a short address complimenting the children and teachers, mentioning specially that the industrial department was a new feature in the school. He said that the work, under the superintendence of Miss Watson, was first-class. Mr. Wallace addressed a few words of encouragement to the children, and spoke of the kind treatment the teachers had received from the Committee during the current yeai*. At the request of the Committee, he handed the children their prizes, and gave a small book as a Christmas gift to the infants. Biscuits and lollies were distributed, and the children dismissed till the Monday after the New year.
