ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL.)

Sib,—Certain writers in the tie Oaraaru Mail would make the public believe that Ngapara is next city to Oamaru in this district ; but their object may easily be guessed. One correspondent writing to the Mail says we are lulled nightly to sleep by the sweet notes of cur local band. What a farce. The truth is our poor band is defunct for the- last two months, and I was much amused one evening outside Mr. Ardagh's shop to see a little urchin whistling " Should auld acquaintance " just near to where the big bom-bom hangs for sale. A meeting was held on Friday last iu Mr. Denis Barry's Assembly Rooms, for the purpose of starting a local journal, to be called the Ngapara Cuckoo, and the result was that a Committee was formed to have preliminary arrangements made at once. Mr. Veritas is • to be the editor, and the correspondent of the Oamaru Mail sub-editor. Paddy Murphy Lambton Quay, Wellington, has kindly promised to contribute.all the news about the Governor ; Mr. George Staines, Auckland, will contribute for the far north ; Mr. Grant, Dunedin, will correspond from that quarter; and the indefatigable correspondent of the Otago Witness will

go right off to Melbourne to meet the Prince of Wale 3 on his arrival in that colony, when we will have all the news about His Royal Highness. The public baths are nearly finished, thanks to the Committee, Messrs. Atkinson, and Allen, and the architect, Mr. T. Murdock, and I have only to hope that their names will appear in the " History of Ngapara, 1880." —I am, &c., Red-VI v E. Ngapara, December 22.
