(rER FKES3 ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. December 20. Owing to heavy rains this morning several shops were flooded to various depths. A woman named Jessie Walker was sentenced to one hours' imprisonment at the Magistrate's Court this morning for being found in the public streets in male attire. AUCKLAND. December 2C. The N.Z.S. Co.'s ship Waikato cleared for London with a cargo valued at L 47.000. The members of the Roman Catholic community are making arrangements for the reception of Archbishop Stein. The Auckland Artillery—Payne's Battery—fired a carbine match against the Dunedin Artillery to-day at the Mount Eden range ; 10 men aside, and 21 shots. The total points made were 576. There was a half-gale blowing from the north. December 21. There is a strong west gale, with squalls of rain. It is feared the continuous wet weather will injure farming operations. At a meeting re the Cambridge railway, it was resolved to get the lines surveyed from Rukukuheo to Cambridge with the view to construct under the District Railway Act. v December 22. A fire broke out at the house of Stephen Dailey, Mount-street, and was suppressed by the neighbors. An only child, three years old, was asleep in the house at the time. A fire destroyed the house of Theodore Brown, Ponsonby. The i uilding was insured in the Liverpool and London for Ll2O, and the furniture in the New Zealand for L 450. The origin of the fire was an upset kerosene lamp. Mr. Graham, Brown's father-in-law, in jumping out of back window, fell, and injured his spine. Inspector Thomson, A.C., and Captain Breton, of the Naval Training School, have been appointed to investigate the charge against Captain Lowrie, the Kaipara pilot. The long distance match, any rifle, was postponed for a month. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 21. There have been heavy floods in the district. At Waingonoati a mass of large pines and other timber were carried away. Above Mr. Brown's sawmill it carried away the embankment of a dam and a bridge, his private property ; and a heavy fresh came down last evening at 10 o'clock, which caused the p.s Hauraki to break away from her moorings. Fortunately her anchor got foul of the cable by which the p.s. Comerang was moored, and also of a large snag, which held her until she was secured. Otherwise she would have come to grief. TIMARU. December 20. Hot northern winds, which usually set in in October, have made their appearance to-day for the first time, and were warmly welcomed by farmers, whose crops were overgrowing themselves owing to the exceptionally wet spring and summer. If the warm winds continue for a fortnight, the harvest will exceed in richness all former ones. December 21. A boatman named Holford committed a violent assault on his wife last night, inflicting very severe injuries. NAPIER. December 21. The schooner Sunbeam, belonging to Auckland, bound from Poverty Bay to Napier with firewood, capsized this morning opposite the Bluff, when only a few yards from the shore. The crew of two men, wlio owned the. schooner, got on the keel, from which they were taken much exhausted. by the barque Lurlirie. The tug went out to try and get the shooner ashore, but through the high sea on she could not attach a rope to the vessel, which is still floating about the harbor and drifting to sea, the wind being off the land. Another attempt will be made to save the vessel when the wind lulls. The Committee of the Club decided to recommend the adoption of the revised weights of the Canterbury Club. WANGANUI. December 22. The celebrated entire horse Painter has died suddenly. He was purchased in Sydney by a Wanganui breeder for L6OO. CHRISTCHTJRCH. December 22. A fire broke out at half-past two on Sunday morning at Norwich Quay, Lyttelton, destroying Pope's blacksmith's shop, Barns' grocery store, Woods' shipchandlers' store, sail loft, and coal yard. The total loss is estimated at L 3500. The insurances are as follow :—L9SO in the South British, L 835 in the Liverpool and Lancashire, L 2300 in the Colonial, and Ll2O in the Sun office. ■ : Parts of these amounts were re-insured in other offices. The fire is supposed to have originated in Pope's blacksmith's shop, which was closed on Saturday at half-past six, when all the fires were supposed to be out. There was an excellent supply of water, and the steam tug Lyttelton laid on her hose and did good service. A sperm whale was inside the Lyttelton breakwater yesterday, and eventually made its escape through a gap in the western breakwater.
