DUNEDIN. | December 10. Among the Ringarooma's passengers are Archbishop Steins, the newly-appointed j Roman Catholic Archbishop of Auckland, [and Mrs. J. B. Steele, the well known actress, CHRISTCHURCH. December 16. The weather is very wet and likely to remain so. It has been raining heavily from the east all day, aud no wind. The crops in the northern districts are levelled in some places, and altogether quite enough rain has now fallen to last for a long timo. December 17. Bareiri is reported as much better, and will probably recover. A 100-yards race for L 5 a side took place this morning between Toohill,.of Timaru, and Hulston, of Christchurch. It was a hollow affair, and was won by Hulston hinds down. The anniversary sports will probably be held on the day after Boxing Day, public feeling being strongly against clashing ■with the Lyttelton regatta. The matter
will be decided to-morrow, at a special meeting of the Sports Committee. The annual meetings of the City and Sydenham Borough Councils were held at noon. At the latter, a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor (Mr. Booth) was unanimously passed. AUCKLAND. December 16. ' The railways contractors are advertising for men and cannot get them. Farmers in the north are almost at a standstill for want of labor, while the unemployed are interviewing to get the Government to let the railway reclamation contract as day labor. Captain Lourie, at Kaipara. has been suspended by the Government. A boatman named Murray, employed at Kaipara station, was drowned alongside the brigantine Nightingale. The man was not sober at the time when he fell. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 16. The Taranaki Jockey Club have published their programme for the races, to be held on the 31st March and Ist April, 1880 ;—Maiden Plate, 50 sovs ; Handicap Steeplechase, 50 sovs ; Taranaki Jockey Clnb Handicap, 250 sovs. Second day:— Handicap Hurdle, 50 sovs ; Hack Hurdle, 20 sovs ; Autumn Handicap, 100 sovs ; Selling Race, 30 sovs ; Ladies' Purse, 40 sovs ; Consolation Stakes, 25 sovs. Taranaki Derby of 1883, for 3-year-old, 100 sovs, nominations for which close on the 10th April, 1880. NAPIER. December 17. The trial for wife murder continues. While cross-examining Dr. Spencer, Mr. Lascelles was suddenly seized with severe palpitation of the heart, and the examination was adjourned until next day. TIMARU. December 16. The weather to-day was very wet, but the flower show, regatta, and the sham fight between the Timaru and Temuka volunteers passed off successfully. The Wanaka, from Dunedin, towed out of danger the barque Glimpse, which has twice been deserted by her crew. The barque is American built, 23 years old, and is heavily insured. She has suffered no damage, A Court of Inquiry has been demanded by the underwriters and others with the object of preventing any more rotten vessels coming here to run the risk of being wrecked.
