MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night, when there were present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors, Townsend, Headland, Humphrey, Roberts, Garland, Smith, and Mainland. The minutes of the previous ordinary and one special meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter having been read from Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach with reference to their account, it was decided to forward Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach a voucher for the amount of their account, intimating that these vouchers have been generally accepted in this neighborhood. In reply to an inquiry from Mr. Sumpter as to what steps had been taken with regard to land taken from Mr. T. Duncan for road purposes in Isis-street, the Clerk was instructed to refer the writer to the Government Engineer, the road having been formed by the Government, A letter was read from Mr. Sumpter, covering a memorandum from Messrs. Street and Morris regarding the steps taken by them to negotiate the LoOOO loan, and offering to send in confidence to the Mayor the name of the client who was prepared to provide the money. After some discussion, it was resolved to pay the amount of commission claimed. The recommendation of the Waterworks Committee re the erection of a foot-bridge bride over the race at Awamoko at a cost of L3O was adopted. The following report from the Engineer was read : I have been requested by the Waterworks Committee to give my opinion as to what the charges ought to be for supplying water from the race to property-owners and others along the line of works. If the requirements, were limited for ordinary domestic pm-poses, then the question of rating could be easily fixed, but it is likely water will be wanted for other purposes, such as watering stock, driving chaff-cutters, and possibly some mills, not to speak of irrigation, of which the whole plain stands much in need. I think, therefore, it would be advisable to make inquiries of all the parties interested to what extent they would Require water before fixing any definite rate of charge for supply. The question of disposing of the water was referred to the Waterworks Committee for report. The Engineer also reported as follows : I have the honor to report that there has not been any damage done to the waterworks during the late heavy rain. The cement recently ordered from Cargills, Gibbs, and Co., is mostly to hand, and is being stored at the gasworks, from which place it will be carted to the reservoir as may be required. We are going to fetch in the water from Grant's tunnel to the reservoir for puddling purposes, three-inch piping being used temporarily for crossing two gullies. Considerable progress is being made with the reservoir works, there being 30 men and 13 horses employed,' All the rest of the works are in good order. Tenders for the erection of the two aqueducts at Peeblestown have been received, and will be laid before you this evening. The tender of Mr. Charles Day (LlO3 ss) for the erection of two aqueducts at Peeblestown, was accepted. Messrs. John Anderson and Co's. account was referred to the Finance Committee for repoxK A report fvom the Reserves Committee recommending that certain municipal sections and reserves be put up to auction ! was adopted. Accounts to the amount of LIBO7 18s 8d were passed for payment as soon as the Council is in funds, and the Council rose.
