FATAL ACCIDENT.
Wo regret to have to record the fact that a painful fatal accident occurred on the Show Ground this afternoon, which has cast a gloom over the whole proceedings. From what we can gather, it appears that several persons were jumping horses over the hurdles at the sheep pens, when one of the horses swerved and knocked down W. 31'Kenzie, a blacksmith at Kafcanttt, and trampled upon hini, bnakinir several of his ribs, and causing al instantaneous death. The circumstances attending the painful accident were rendered even ntor>» distressing bv the fact that the poor fellow was accompanied by two out of a family of eleven children. Deceased's body was removed on a stretcher, and an inquiry will be held to-morrow. We cannot too strongly condemn the practice of allowing horsemen to ride about the ground, but more especially of permitting jumping. We have lung thought the practice a tbnserotta one, and our opinion has been painfully confirmed by the sad accident of to-dav. A mounted messenger was at once despatched to Kakanui to inform deceased's wife of her sad loss, and a subscription list in her.behaif, and that of her children, was started on the Show Ground immediately after the occurrence of (he accident.
