MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—his Worship the Mayor, Councillors, Garland, Humphrey, Mainland, Otterson, Roberts, Smith, and Townsend. The winutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and. ap* proved. Mr. Charles Glass wrote aslt.aig that he might be released from the lease of Reserve F on account of the heavy rental and for other reasons. He intimated that he w<is prepared to abandon all the improvements he had effected if the Council would absolve hiui from all liability on account of arrears for rent.

The Town Clerk stated that the applicant was about L3B in arrears.

It was decided to graut the application on the payment of the arrears of rent, immediate possession of the land, to be given.

The matter of leasing the above reserve, and other reserves now vacant, was referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. A letter was read from Mr. P. Ford, late contractor 011 the Waterworks, urging that, in consequence of the injuries he had received 011 the works, incapacitating him from earning a livelihood, the amount of the vouchers held by him constitute •> preference claim. It was decided to reply ths + till ® application would receive thp v'ouncil s best consideration. Messrs, I'arr Mothers applied for permission ta e r ~ ofc a verandah in front of their praises, Thames-street, similar j 0 tK»G in front of Messrs. Stemson and ieigli's shop. The application was granted, the work to be carried out under the Engineer's supervision. Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach wrote asking the Cojncil to give therr 4 a bill at four months for the amount of their account.

It was decided to reply that the Council had been advised that they could not accept any bills. A letter was read from the Palmerston Borough Council asking the Council to co-operate in an effort to get a late.y train each way between Dunedin &nd Oama.ru. It was stated that wl'nilo the proposal, if acceded to, would confer a benefit upon PfthiVorston', it would not be of any greatadvantage to Oamaru. It was resolved to acknowledge receipt of the letter. Permission was granted to Messrs. Thomson and Co., soda water manufacturers, to remove a few cartloads of earth from the cutting at Aln-street, subject to the supervision of the Engineer. Messrs. Cargills, Joachim and Co. wrote as follows : The Town Clerk, Oamaru. Pear Sir, —We beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of July 18, intimating the wish of the Municipal Council that the proceeds of the L 40,000 loan be paid to their credit with the National Bank of New Zealand ; but as we have already informed our Dunedin firm by wire, the papers, bonds, &c., would have to take a different form before the loan would be likely to bo successfully floated in this market. Several councillors expressed regret at the meagreness of tho information contained in tho letter. A letter was read from the treasury, intimating that the sum of LG 2s, 011 account of by-law penalties, had been paid to the credit of the Council.

Mr. J. C. Gilchrist wrote asking for information with reference to the account sent in by him for roj'alty on stone used for the Waterworks. The Town Clerk stated that he had not seen the account.

Accounts were forwarded by the Waitaki and Waiareka 8.0a,d Boards in connection with the road to the Municipal quarry. The accounts were referred to the Finance Committee.

The tender of Messrs. Cargill, Gibbs, and Co. for the supply of cement for the valve tower at the reservoir was accepted. The matter of compensation to Mr. Ross was referred to the Waterworks Committee for arraugement. The Engineer was directed to call for tenders for the erection of aqueducts at Peebles, The Waterworks Committee &ere empowered to arrange with Mr. Peattie re access to his property. The question of filling in the lagoon was referred to the Waterworks Committee for report. A report from the Finance Committee dealing with several matters was read and adopted. Accounts to the amount of L 1179 14s were passed for payment, and the-Counci! rose.
