CHRISTCHURCH TRAINING NOTE,S. " The Hermit," in a Christchurch paper, writes : —On Wednesday Cutis was as early as ever at work, Mata and going twice round together, pace the first time was slow, t\ui was. increased; the second time, nice-looking Waimea, colt did %hort work in company with Qberon. Atlantic was to have been riddeio, in his work by a light boy, hut the. colt swerved off the course near and, crossing his legs, rolling clean,

over the boy, who l.iy quite still for some time, leading the spectators to believe that a really bad accident had taken place. Barring a bruise on the side of the head, however, the boy was not hurt, though of course a good deal shaken, and he soon recovered sufficiently to walk to Chokebore Lodge. The colt was then mounted by a stronger and heavier lad, and did his work, which consisted of a half-speed turn round the course. Soukar and Romeo had a spin of half a mile together, and the bay went on for another mile. Of the jumpers, Robin Hood and Silverstream both. did satisfactory work, and later on in the morning Ray himself crawled round the, course on the big Australian grey, Lonehand. Tim Whiffler and Bide-a- Wee had some spurts up the straight, the former showing to advantage. The little Sydney bay is looking first-rate, and, though I do not think he can quite win the Welcome Stakes, he will run a good colt. Maritana. with a rug on and a light boy in the saddle, galloped along with Templeton, Ray up, and Hornby, stripped, with Wattie for a pilot. The trio went about a mile at threequarter speed. Hornby is less taking than ever in his slow paces, but still one caunot shut one's eyes to the fact that the stable are confident, and have the best trying tackle of any establishment. 'Piscatorius had his exercise, which was moderate, singly on the plough. Te Whetu and York had a slashing good gallop, both stripped. The colt went as strong as a lion, and should win the Free Handicap if in the humor to race. Pinfire and Camballo went a good gallop on the plough, the puce being first-rate all the way, and Lara had a fast spin twice round the course itself. Luna led The Agent in his work. Midge was going at three-quarter speed, but though she is a well-bred one, she is not likely to distinguish herself here. Hilarious was working on the course, about three-quarters of a mile being his allowance. Edward James and Daisy, from the Bush Inn, galloped from the mile post, while Betrayer and Adamant, starting from the same place, travelled about two miles, though not at top speed. The two-year-olds worked later on.
