The inquest • on the bpdy of Robert Sales, who died suddenly >osterday, was held to-day. -Dr. Diver deposed that, in his oriinion, death was caused by narcotic poisoning, and thought the contents of the stomach should bo analysed. The inquest was adjourned until Tuesday, to allow the contents of the. stomach to be analysed. AUCKLAND. ; November 1. The Government have ordered the release of Cole, of the Minister of Marine, as soon as the vessel is clear away. . At the Diocesan Synod, the question of religious instruction in .State schools came up, and resolutions were agreed to recommending a provision in the Act similar to the New South Wales Education Act be urged upon the Legislature through the General Synod. The Board of Education lias requested the Chairman (Mr. James M'Cosh Clarke) to proceed to Wellington' to represent the Board's claims arid interests to the Government iu various matters. Last night a boy named Williams, aged 10, was arrested for breaking into Br.ook's boot factory. He entered by the window early in the morning, and robbed! the till by means of skeleton' keys. The Customs returns for October were L1G,713, showing a decline of L4OOO on on the previous month. November 3. Sirs. Peacock, wife of the Mayor, has died suddenly. At an inquest on the body of Robert Glover, killed by a cart accident, it appeared from the evidence that the acci-' dent was largely owing to drink. The party called at two public-houses on the road. Even the lunatic had a glass of rum given him. The cart capsized twice ; the last time with a fatal reault. A verdict of accidental death, without a rider, was returned. WESTPORT. November 1. A boy, nine years old, the son of Mrs. j Maumson, dressmaker, has been missing since Thursday afternoon. He has probably fallen off the coal stail's into the river. TIMARU. ' November 1. The first contract of the Breakwater was successfully completed by Allan and Stumbles this morning. It extends about 500 feet from the beach. The depch of water ranges up to 15 feet at low tide' at' the outer end. CHRISTCHURCH, November 1. Entries for the November Grand Exhibition in connection with the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Society number upwards of 6000.
