THE TIMARU SHOW.

SECOND DAY. (fuo.m OUR OWN CO;UtKSrONDE>"T.) Ti.maku, October 29. This morning broke with a dull sky, but tho weather improved until the day became it most suitable one for the occasion. Tho streets are crowded with people from the country on their way to the show. SUEEP. There is a general expression of regret that Mr. Menlove, tho Totara and Ardgowan Estates omitted to send exhibits of Lincolns, as they did last year. The exhibits in this class are confined to Messrs. H. J. Hall and P. H. Russell, and are not nparjy Hp tQ tlje standard of last year's. Had Qatnaru sor)t exhibits in this class she would have carried the day, as she did in the case of Merinos, The English Leicesters are exhibited solely by Messrs, H. J. Sealoy and P. H. Russell, and suffered from a oomparison with the Border Leicesters shown by Messrs. Parker Brothers. In Romney Marsh, Mr. John Eeid, of Elderslie, is justly successful with animals from the celebrated flock of the late Dr. Webster and the New Zealand and Australian Land Company with animals from the same source. In the class for Cotswolds, the sheep were exclusively shown by Messrs. J. T. Ford and Co. The Hon. Robert Campbell's merinos are ? however, tho great attraction in the sheep exhibits. In this class the points secured are as follow The Hon. R. Campbell, 88 ; Mr. Rhodes, 15; Mr. Rutherford, 5. Colonel Packe's two eighteen-months old rams were the only exhibits in this class comparable 'with those of the Hon. R. Campbell. One that was bred by Mr. David Taylor, of Tasmania, got the second prize against on? of Mr. Campbell's district bred sheep. Tho best ram in the yard was chosen ' from a pair bred by Mr. Campbell, his celebrated imported Victorian rara, bred by Mr. Cumming, being rejected by the judges after considerable discussion. It is highly satisfactory to the district that a ram bred within it should beat the distinguished Victorian which took the first prize last year at Christchurch. The victor's strong point was evenness, amplitude, and universality of fleece, which reached down to his toes, whilst his imported opponent was bright and taking in appearance. All

the Hon. R. Campbell's merinos were well brought out. This was a matter for pleasurable surprise ; but it was still more surprising owing to the fact that the sheej) shown were taken from a stud flock numbering a thousand. TJie Hon. Ri Gamp- : bell was only beaten .in one class, in which he had only one exhibit, and this was so little behind the prize-taker in point of; merit as to render the decision a difficult' one to arrive at. Mr. Rhodes, Mr. Pearsoli, the Land Company, and Mr. Rutherford were the principal competitors with Mr. Campbell this year. Some of the exhibits, one would think, were sent with the object of showing, by the great conthe superiority of Mr. Campbell's. PRIZE LIST. Sheep. Certificates of Merit are awarded to exhibitors gaining the highest number of points in the Classes of Merino, English Leicester, Border Leicester, Lincoln, bomney Marsh, and Cotswold Sheep. The sum of Lo is given for the best Merino Ram in the yard, and the sum of L2 for the best Ram in English Leicester, Border Leicester, Lincoln, Romney Marsh, and Cotswold classes ; but these prizes do not j carry extra points. A first prize of 30s and second prize of 15s are given as first and second prizes respectively, in every every class. Judges may commend the third best exhibit if thought worthy, MERINOS.
