WELLINGTON. . October 18. The departure of tho cable-repairing steamer Agnes has been postponed until Monday afternoon. ; The Committee of Selection lias api pointed Messrs. Colbeck, Gisborne, Bain, Johnston, Swanson, Montgomery, and Whyce to be a Committee to report whether the Auckland City West election 1 petition is in order - . Tho Election Committee on the petition against the return of Sir George Grey for ■ Cliristchurch was struck to-day, and ?is . constituted as follows—Fulton (chairman), Moorhouse (representing the petitioners), Stewart (representing the sitting member). 1 and Messrs. Colbeck, M'Caughan, Aliwrighfc, and Te Wheoro. October 19. A three-roomed cottage at Oriental Bay, occupied by James M'Nally, was totally destroyed by fira last night. It is believed to be insured in the South British for LIOO. M'Nally is unable to account for the fire, which broke out while he was absent from home. October 20. The following has been officially supplied to all the representatives of the Press :—" We are authorised by the Committee of Management of the Liberal party to state that the absurd rumors which have been circulated in the papers respecting a coalition are entirely without foundation. No member of the party ever contemplated such a movement. We are further authorised to state that not a member of the party will agree to a coalition. and no overtures of the kind have ever been made by the Opposition." AUCKLAND. October 19. The men wounded in the explosion of ammunition on bpard the Naval Brigade Pinnace are progressing favorably. Mr. James Mackay, Native Commissioner, has gone to Piako in connection with the native outrage. October 20. A fire took place early this morning in Masefield's Buildings, Albert-street, and Branston and Forster's, gasfitters. Forster, one of the partners, slept on the premises, and says he was awakened by hearing sounds of falling plaster. On getting up he saw that the drawing room and pattern-loft were on fire, and gave the alarm. The fire subsided in half-an-liour. The damage done was considerable. The roof of Masefield's office was also destroyed, together with the contents of the shop. The premises of Reynolds, lapidary, were injured. The firm had insurances on workshop and pattern-loft .to about LIOO in the New
Zealand Insurance Oflico. The origin of the fire is unknown. Forster thinks it i 3 in connection with the gas fittings. Branchman Boreham was severely cut by falling slates, and fainted from the loss of blood. A movement is on foot to form a second Volunteer Artillery Corps under Captain Isaacs. Forty have already joined. DUNEDIN. October IS. The Executive Committee of thu Industrial Association have adopted a petition for presentation to Parliament praying for the establishment of a discriminating tariff, which will afford a measure of protection to local industry.
