Three thousand persons were drowned. October 17The English brandy market has advanced, prices having risen 3d per gallon. Sucrar has advanced Gd per cwt. Tallow is in active demand at full rates. At public sales of Australian nearly all the tallow ottered wa3 disposed of. The following are the quotations : —Mutton : Inferior, 32s to 32s Gd ; medium, 34s to 35s ; best quality, 35s to 36s 6d. Beef : Inferior, 31s to 32s Gd ; medium, 34s to 34s 6d ; best quality, 34s 9d to 355. The tin market is excited, and quotations fluctuate from day to day. Present quotations from L 92 to L9<3.
The corn market is strong, with ail upward tendency. Australian wheat is selling, ex store, at from 61s to 63s per 49Glbs ; and ex ship, at G2s per 4Solbs. October 18. Lord Salisbury has been banquetted at Manchester.
The Government has placed • Turkey under restraint. Russian aggression failing, Turkey and Austria are now acting jointly, Germany approving. Currants have advanced a shilling and three shillings, and brandy eighteen pence, owing to the heavy frosts at Girondc. October 19. Said is the new Yizier of Turkey. Sydney, October 20. Crowds are arriving for the Exhibition. Dr. Hector and Mr. Brett are actively advertising the wealth and resources of New Zealand. The Rhine sailors brilliantly banquetted the English and Austrian sailors with much enthusiasm and amity. A match for L-400 has been made between William Trickett and H. M'Lean. The backers of the latter, if he is successful in this match, will back him for LIOOO against the champion, Edward Trickett. News from the Cape states that Cetcwayo has been found to be a man of intellect and a superior commander. It is absolutely untrue that the murderous nature of the movement on Isandula was of his creating. '
