WELLINGTON. September 20. The petition against the return of Mr. Boweii for Kaiapoi will be presented next week. It is understood that His Excellency the Governor, in reply to a cablegram from Sydney, asking him to visit the Sydney Exhibition, has intimated his inability to leave Now Zealand during the session of Parliament. A requisition is in course of signature, asking the Hon. Mr. Randall Johnston to stand for Mayor. The balance sheet of the Wellington Tramway Company shows ? credit balance of L 705 10s lid. There is, however, a charge of L 1945 7s 3d for interest, which absorbs this balance. The unpaid calls a.nount to LI94G 15s. AUCKLAND. September 26. Colonel Praser addresses the Thames electors to-morrow night. Mr. Robert Graham, it is rumored, will be a candidate. Strong efforts are being made to induce Mr. Whitaker to contest the Thames. September 27. Billy Wilson, of the Georgia Minstrels, has been arrested on a charge of larceny of a watch and chain. He was remanded, and bail allowed. Sailed-—The mail steamer, for Sydney. Mr. De Lias has engaged for a season, at the Theatre Royal, the American star actress, Miss Immogene, who arrived by the San Francisco steamer. The hearing of the action, Newman v. Machatti, for alleged corrupt practices at the City West election, is fixed for Thursday. It is feared that the postponement will prevent a petition being sent to the Assembly within the time prescribed by the law.
CHRISTCHUECH. September 26. Another case of sticking up—this time on the Xew Brighton Road—is reported. The victim was assaulted by two. men, beaten with a stick, and robbed of a watch and some money. The Penguin is expected to arrive about noon to-morrow from Wellington with the San Francisco mail, The Dunedin portion will be gent on by special train. ASHBURTOK September 27. The first number of the Ashburton Guardian was issued to-day. It is a biweekly morning paper, and decidedly anti-Groyite in politics. It is promoted by the farmers and merchants of the district, and published by Weeks and Dixon, proprietors of the Evening Herald. INVEROAUGJLL. September 20. Mr. Cutlibert Oowan was to-day elected Chairman of the Southland County Council, vice Mr. J. S. Shanks, resigned. A man named Howarth has been consigned to gaol for three months in default of payment of a fine for sly grog selling, KUMAIvA. September 26. The man Cochrane was recovered at 8 o'clock this morning, relays of miners constantly working all night. When taken out it was found that the lower part of his limbs were paralysed, but thore were no broken bones. He v<as conveyed to the hospital. Tho body of Oakey is not yet recovered, although the miners have been working energetically all day. New timber had to be put in before they could work with any safety. It is thought the body may be got out before midnight. Ewen, who was released last night, was not injured, although he sustained a shock to the nervous system.
