An action for libel against the Wan<_;aiiui Chronicle and the writer of a letter signed " Waitotara " has been instituted by Mr. Ballance, M.H.R. The libel is contained in the charge that Mr. Ballance had filched L2OOO from the Colonial Treasury to enable a co-partner (Mr. Larnach) in a land company to go Home and gull the English public. The places of those men who struck work on the reclamation contract have been filled readily. ASH BURT ON. September 19. At ihe R.M. Court to-day Harry Robertson, charged, on remand, with passing a valueless cheque and obtaining goods by false pretences, was acquitted on both charges. George Franklyn, a lad of about 15, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor, for larcency of propertv from a tent near Ilakiua, valued at L2. TIMARU. September 20. Two men have been droivned in the Ohau River. Inspector Pender received a telegram this morning rrom Mr. Middiet on, manager of the ISenmore Station, and sent from Duniroon, in which ?>lr. Midrileton stated that two men had been ' drowned in the Ohau River. ISo names ' were given. The Ohau River divides Canterbury from Otago, and the Benmore Station is on the Otago side.
