The New Zealand Agricultural Co.'s first laud sale at Gore, on the 12th, was an immenso success. The township averaged L3O and LSO per section, and the agricultural land Lls 15s per acre. The inquest on the fire was adjourned until to-morrow. W. Waters, proprietor of the cafe chautant, where the fire is supposed to have originated, has been arrested on a charge of arson. The Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club have fixed the dates of the Spring and Autumn Meetings of the Club as follows :—Spring meeting on Saturday, 29th November, and Monday, Ist December ; and the autumn meeting on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, theSCth, 27th, and 2Sth of February, 1880. In the District Court this morning Judge Ward gave judgment in the case White v. the South British Insurance Cn. in which plaintill claimed L2OO insurance on household furniture, piano, and organ. Defendants pleaded that the conditions of the policv had not been fulfilled, plaintiff having failed to give notice of subsequent insurances on furniture, thus invalidating the policy. Judgment was given fur the defendants oil legal grounds. Plaintiff gave notice of appeal. CHRISTCHURCH. September 15. The Lyttolton Gas Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent, for the year ending August 31. September IG. The Grand Lodge session of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (American Constitution) opened last night, under the presidency of R.W.G.M. Bro. Wheeler. .Fifteen delegates were present. An address of welcome was presented by a Reception Committee of the Canterbury lodges, to which the Grand Master replied, expressing a hope that the session would be productive of the spread of the principles of the Order through Now Zealand. The Grand Lodge will sit daily till Thursday next. Bosselman, manager of the American sewing machine depot, died very suddenly last night. The cause is supposed to be heart disease. WANGANUI. September 15. A fire on Sunday morning destroyed a general store on T'aupo Quay occupied by William Kells, and the Railway Hotel, occupied by Mr. Capstick. Insurances — Kell's stock, LGOO in National, and LGOO in the Imperial ; furniture, L 250 in the Transatlantic; hotel building, L6OO in Union, and Ll5O in the North British ; stock and furniture, L4do in the Standard, and Ll5O in the North British. There was an ample supply of water. The Brigade worked splendidly. The origin of the fire is unknown.
