There arc unpleasant rumors about a well-known Dunudin solicitor, whose defalcations are said to amount to L7OOO. Tiie news of the loss of their family was broken to the Misses Wilson by the Mayor to-day, which, strange to say, was the thirteenth birthday of the younger girl. The inquest on the bodies to-day showed that one of the victims arrived in this Colony only a week before the lire, having come here for the good of his health, leaving a wife and four children in Scotland. One of the women had not been in the Colony a year. The inquest was adjourned until Monday, AUCKLAND. September 13. Tho immigrants who recently arrived are at liist finding employment, the women iu domestic service and the men on the Waikato aud East Coast districts. W. E. Mr. Williams, one of a party of four prospectors at Wairarapa, has just tested at the Moanaiairi Battery a parcel of one ton of hard stone taken out of tho large reef discovered by Yv illiams and his mates in the ranges about 17 miles back from Featherston. The result of the test, which was very carefully made, was a yield of 23 dwts. from a little over a ton of hard stone. Mr. Williams "brought the stone from Featherston to the Thames, knowing the superior appliances for testing on the field. September 10. Assays of value of the Wairarapa gold show it to be worth L 3 18s per ounce, being higher than the average value of the Thames gold. CHRISTCHURCPT. Sep! ember 12. Five youngsters were brought up at the Court to-day for burglary. They were found to be the culprits who were wanted for the extraordinary raid on a tobacconist's shop in Ooloiiibo-sU'-'et. alia tliey had also broken into the Theatre Royal, and taken several things. At a meeting of the County Council to-day. a rese>iuuon was passed requesting tiie members of both Houses to support anv amendment in the Couni ies Act wnich would permit of each riding in a County being rated separately for general purposes suilicient to meet its own requirements for public works plus its shave of the County's working expenses. Tho mover pointed out ihat in some ridings no great expenditure for roads, etc., was required, while in others the case was different. lie saw no good reason why those ridings which had provided themselves with roads should be compelled to levy rates equal to those which required public works. At the same meeting a resolution was passed urging that County Councils should be allowed the same privileges with regard to endowment as were enjoyed by Harbor Hoards, Municipal Councils, and other bodies. The girl Lucas, who was missed from Limestone Hills some days since, has turned up all right.
