ELECTION GOSSIP.

' Christchurch. September 10. Business seemed to be entirely suspended throughout the city to-day, and the general interest to be devoted to matters electioneering. It was half-past seven o'clock before the poll was declared, and there were then at least 3000 people in front of the Hall. The following were the numbers polled :—■ Sir G. Grey ... ... 1315 Andrews (Ministerial) ... 1250 Stevens (Opposition) ... 1250 Richardson (Opposition)... 1227. Treadwell ... .... ... 554 The excitement was intense, and there was great rejoicing. When the "result was made known the cheering could be heard a mile and a half away. The mob went to Coker's Hotel, determined to have Sir George Grey out.
