I WELLINGTON. August 20. In- a supplement to the Government Gazette issued to-day, it is officially notified that writs for the return of duly qualified persons to serve as members of the House of Representatives have been issued and made returnable on the 17th September. The new Parliament is formally summoned at noon on the latter date. The polling for., the purpose of ascertaining the opinion of the citizens on the subject of the proposed loan of L 130,000 for additional water supply, resulted as follows : For it, 1099 ; against, 388. The enquiry into the charges brought against Captain M'Kersie, of .the Government steamer Stella, has resulted in favor of the accused, who has been reinstated to the command of her. The Hon. J. Johnston has presented LIOO to the Benevolent Society. August 21. The Wakatipu, from Sydney, "las just arrived. AUCKLAND. August 20. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting, for the purpose of considering the memorial received from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce on the subject of the American tariff, and the desirability of securing some reduction in favor of colonial products, the following motion, moved by Mr. Dargaville, was carried against three different amendments, viz. : That the interest of the Colony, and particularly of this provincial district, will not be served by throwing open our markets free to the products of other countries, while New Zealand products of the same class are excluded from theirs. CHRISTCHURCH. August 20. There has been a quarrel between the members of the medical staff of the Hospital, which has led to the resignation of two of them. The Board have tried to settle the difficulty harmoniously, without accepting the resignations. The two youngsters who have been committing a round of petty larcenies lately were sent to the Industrial School for four years to-day. The Waimakariri water supply experiment will be put to the test next week, all the necessary preparations, sinking the cylinder, &c., having been made. DUNEDIN. August 20. The annual show of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held during the last week of November. A meeting of citizens was held last evening at the Provincial Hotel, at which it was resolved to form a Liberal Association, and to take steps to secure the return of suitable representatives at the approaching elections. Another meeting will be held at the same place on Friday evening, with the same object. NAPIER. August 20. The Evening Star, the new Liberal paper, has been a great and unexpected success. It was started to assist the Government candidates in the election, but will most probably be continued. GISBORNE. August 20. The native named Henare has been charged with having caused the death of a boy by witchcraft. The Native Minister has decided to send him to Taupo, where he has friends. The Hinemoa arrived with Mr. Sheehan this morning. A deputation of 25 of the leading citizens waited on him. He made some definite promises regarding railways and roads. As to other matters, he would submit them to the Cabinet, and give them his support. The deputation seemed quite satisfied. Mr. Sheehan left in the evening for Tauranga. INVERCARGILL. August 20. Mr. Tyerman, the Freethought and Spiritualistic lecturer, is drawing good houses here. He lectured to-night on " How to communicate with departed spirits," and gave tliein the elements of the system, and described the different processes of mediumship. During the course of his address he referred to the well-known Professor Baldwin, stating that that gentleman, who possessed remarkable powers, was denouncing and pretending to expose what he (Mr. Baldwin) himself believed in. Mr. Tyerman characterised Baldwin's action as scandalous.
