ELECTION GOSSIP.
Dtxnedik, August 6. The Star's Arrow correspondent telegraphs : —" The coming elections are beginning to make a stir amongst politicians. The probable candidates for the Wakatipu are Messrs. Thomas Fergus, William Mason, James Macassey, H. Manders, and Finn. Queenstown will support Mr. Mason, and Arrow will support Mr. Fergus. Neither Mr. Finn nor Mr. Manders will probably obtain many votes, the others having been first to declare themselves. Mr. Macassey will stand a first-class chance, as people seem to think it was a mistake that he was not elected before. He is sure to poll well amongst the miners.'' The Tuapeka Times says that it is rumored that Mr. Horace Bastings will not contest the seat for Waikaia at the forthcoming election, his intention being to retire from politics for a season. Christchtjrch, August G. The Star to-night says : —lt formed matter for gossip in the streets of the city this morning that a meeting, consisting of H. Thomson, F. Hobbs, J. Pratt, J. Gould, R. J. S. Harman, and G. G. Stead, was held in Ford's Buildings yesterday afternoon, for the purpose of taking action to support the Conservative interest, and destroy the Government of Sir George Grey, by securing the return of candidates pledged to drive him from power. It is concurrently reported that the principal result of the meeting was a resolve to request Mr. Hobbs to come forward as a candidate for one of the seats of the city, and there is every reason to believe that Mr. Hobbs wi'l consent to do so. Mr. Hobbs denies that he is going to stand, and says tha,t business will prevent him. Auckland, August 6. Mr. Sheehan's address to the electors appears in the Thames papers, likewise that of Mr. F. Buckland for Franklyn. Napier, August 6. Mr. Rees is not on the Napier electoral roll, although he is qualified to vote. He claimed in the usual manner, but for some unexplained reason the Revising Officer disallowed the claim. Mr. Buohanan, who contested Napier at the last election and was defeated, will probably again come forward. His views are liberal, but it is not likely that he would support Sir G. Grey. Greymouth, August G. Mr. Woolcock telegraphs that he is on the Hokitika Roll, so he is qualified to stand for Grey Valley. Invercargill, August 6. At a meeting of the Reform Association this evening, resolutions were adopted supporting Mr. Feldwick's candidature for the town, and requesting Sir George Grey to address a public meeting here during the recess. Mr. -John R. Cuthbertson, formerly M.H.R. for Invercargill, will stand for Wallace in the independent Liberal interest, Gisborxe, August 6. Mr. Allan has announced his candidature. In politics he will probably support Sir George Grey. It is not likely that Mr. Tucker will stand, but Mr. Woodbine Johnston will announce himself in a day or so.
