j Tub Wellington special correspondent ot the Lyttelton Times has informed tli.it paper • tti.it the Government has ilcc-tiK-<l that Ml". I 'ommi.-J.iont,-r < '">ny.;r- cannot be removed [ from (.'hristehureh to Dunedin. The reason L.'i-.> ti is that Christehi'.rch is the centre «•! the ili'.Ml'-- Island railway system. Tlit-s is tl;»! opinion vf the < Sovernmmt. The Ot::"-.'' lUiiy Times thinks differently. an.l ni-p.-n----to he terribly awiojed that Dimedin, the hub if the universe, anil the centre 01 l!ic '' railway system and of the commercial in- * tere.-ts of the ("olony. should have been dc:l J.rive.i of Mr. I V.uyeis, and that in an " •-underhand manner." Ot course, tlie s Times clearly proves—or rather seeks to t p ro ve—that Dunedin is tile c. ntre of the f raitwav svstem. I'ut it does not attempt v o annte the paint, anil perhaps it is just as y well tiiat it has omitted to ilo so. li the e Times hail merely said that Christehureh ,v was not the centre, it would have enlisted ;l 0(lr heartiest sympathy, for we do not believe ( { tiiat it is. Cut, neither do wo believe that Dunedin can justly iay claim to being the eentre. We have consiilereil the matter ' r carefully -it is only by doing so that a reallv correct conclusion e.in be arrived at W and tind that Oamaru should be the Omic ntissioiier's headquarters. Oamaru is the '' eentre of the railway system of the Middle 0 Island, and the vantage ground from which our railways could be cliiciently worked, e We cannot lay claim to tho possession of as much wooil as f'iiristehurch, or as much ii bricks and mortar as Dunedin, but it is here s that numerous branch lines converge, which ~ tap a large area of agricultural country. l( Oamaru is situated as nearly as possible mid- ■ way between the termini of the AmberlyInvereargill line, and is, in fact, the Oinaha 'j of the Middle Island. We think we have a better claim than anybody else to Mr. Convent.
