(from our own correspondents. ) | DUNEDIN. July 14. The election does not appear to excite much interest, but botli candidates are working hard, and expect it to be a close contest. Outside opinion favors Mr. Stewart's return. The charges against Reid and wife for sly grog-selling were dismissed, con- j ditionally on their leaving the district. j Judge Williams and a jury have been engaged the whole of to-day deciding a question of partnership in the sea elephant which has been exhibited throughout the Colony at considerable loss. The plaintiff was a showman, and the defendant the chief proprietor of the whaling barque Splendid. CHRISTCHURCH. July 14. William Strange, charged with violently assaulting his infant son, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor.
