THE LATE FLOODS.

The following report from the Inspector of Works, read at yesterday's meeting of the County Council, gives a pretty cleatidea of the damage done to the county roads by the late floods : Oamaru, 10th July, 1579. The Engineer Waitaki County Council. Sir,—l have the honor to forward report for the month of June. Hampden Riding.—"With the exception of a small portion at the Horse Range, no damage was done to the roads by the floods in this riding. Otcpopo Riding.—The road at Maheno township has been slightly damaged by the overflow of water, and also the approach to the Island Stream bridge. This bridge is now too small to carry the water in flood time, owing to its being confined into one place by the railway embankment. The arches were quite full, and the water running over the road two feet deep. Kakanui Uiding.—Two of the piers of the Kakanui bridge have been undermined, and a portion carried away by the flood. Part of the north side approach also has been washed away. Props have been put under the superstructure, aud the roadway fenced off. Portions of the gravel of the road towards Incholme were washed away by the overflow of water. Waiareka Riding.—Considerable damage was done to the roads in this riding near Teancraki, and at Ngapara a culvert was washed down. J. would beg to suggest that the road through Teaneraki township be formed and metalled. It requires it very much. The contracts on Xo. 2 road are not yet completed. Papakaio Riding.—A good many of the culverts in this riding have been silted up with clay from the Oamaru water-race. I would beg to suggest that the road from Papakaio rail way "station to the main road be gravelled, along with those portions at Dalgleisli and Stewart's, Awamoko Riding.—A portion of the pitchin"- at Awamoko creek lias been washed out. I would beg to draw your attention to that portion of road between Awamoko creek and Black Point. It is kept continually in a wet state with leakage from the water-race. The roads and several culverts on the Tables have been damaged. Otekaike Riding.—A new pitched crossing has been put in at the Ivuvow. The ditching ou the Benmore Flat is being proceeded with. The work of repairing the damage caused by the floods is being done as rapidly as possible. I lia\"e liad to employ four extra surface men, viz., two in Kakanui. one in Waiareka, and one in Awamoko Ridings. I have, &c., J. Barron, Inspector..

The various matters were dealt with as follows :—That the matter of metalling the main road, Waiareka, be deferred till next meeting ; that tenders be called for gravelling tli e road from the railway station, at Teaneraki, to "Wellington-street; that that portion of road from the railway station, Papakaio, to the main road be proclaimed a county road ; and that the other recommendations be ordered to stand over.
