WELLINGTON. July 10. Antonio Biotfcosi was convicted of unlawfully wounding another Italian. Sentence was deferred. DUNEDJN. July 11. At the Police Court this morning there was a clean bill of fare, not a single case being on the charge sheet. It is expected that there will be a close run between Stewart and Reeves for the town seat. The betting is in favor of the former. Last night, at seven o'clock, a fire broke out at James Shaud's, West Taieri. The farm buildings were completely destroyed, with forty head of fat cattle. The loss is estimated at L4OOO, which is only partly covered by insurance. CHRISTCHURCH. July 10. Mi-. Joseph Dransneld, an old resident in Lyttelion, died to-day, aged 81. Lewis was acquitted of arson to-day, though the judge summed up dead against him. This is the third arson charge this session which has resulted in acquiwal. A quarryman at Halswell, a few miles from town, named William Betridge, was killed to-day. The rope he was suspended from on the face of the works was cut by falling boulders, and he fell 30 feet. He was quii.e dead when picked up. He leaves a wife and two children. A house in Carlecon Place, insured for L3OO in the National, was set on fiw; by some one last night. A box of rubbish was put through a window and sot alight, and the perpetrator decamped. The house was unoccupied. The rubbish was saturated with oil. AUCKLAND. July 10. A woman named Susan Wlieai.erall fell overboard from the schooner Christina while endeavoring to get into a dingy. Two sailors succeeded in rescuing her. The Union Bank shipped by the Hero for Sydney 19C3 ounces of gold, and the National Bank shipped to Melbourne 191G ounces.
TIMARU. July 10. It is said the Timaru School Committee intend resigning en masse, owing to the action of the Board of Education re the appointment of a second master. There were again no nominations today for the four vacant seals in the Timaru Borough Council. The debentures for the Timaru Waterworks loan will be forwarded by the outgoing San Francisco mail. Early this morning some persons unknown broke in nearly all the front windows of the shop of 3?. A, Sirp3 and Co. NEW PLYMOUTH. July 10. Mr. Rees, the new Harbor Board engineer, is pushing on with the preliminary work at the site of the harbor, and in a short time LICOO will be expended in labor. The Board hj& sent L6OOO home to the credit of Sir John Coode, for him to expend for plant for the harbor works. The Borough Council is arranging to expend between L2OOO and L3OOO on the streets of the town. INVERCARGILL. July 10. Out of the 54 school committees in Southland, 37 have expressed an opinion relative to the re-introduction of the Bible into public schools—32 being in favor and four against the proposal.
