Iv writing of the rumor that Mr. Ballance u about to resign liis portfolio, which, by the way, has been authoritatively contradicted." the Timaru Herald hints that Mr. Baliauce will "feel himself constrained to relinquish his portfolio" before long, and say 3 that it is stated that Mr. Moss, the member for Parnell, will be Mr. Balance's -::: cess >r. These rumors have afforded the Herald an opportunity of indulging m its much-loved pastime of ridiculing somebody. It says that "Mr. Moss"— who ha>, ii appears, committed the shocking sin of allowing persons to spread rumors about his intentions—" is as inexperienced, incompetent, and submissive as the Premier could desire/' and things

equally disagreeable to everyone but the writer. The Timaru Herald should know that the member for Parnell is the very opposite of what it has stated him t > be, and, in addition to that he not uiily professes to be a gentleman, but he is one. We know not whether Mr. Ballance will resign, or whether, if he should do so, Mr. Moss will bo asked to occupy his place, but we do know that as a good, sound practical politician, and as an unobtrusive gentleman, he docs not merit the Herald's rough remarks. Fortunately, Mr. Mos3 is as well, or, perhaps, better known than liis calumniator —not only in this part of the colony, where he for years held the prominent position of Provincial Treasurer of Otago with honor and ability, but in the North, where he has always been acknowledged to be a clever politician and a fluent speaker. There is no man in the colony who possesses a clearer head for figures. In fact, to sum up, the only sin he has committed is that he has supported the present Government, and it docs not reflect credit on the Timaru Herald that it does not know this, or, that, knowing it, it has launched out in remarks so rude regarding such a worthy man.
