RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before:'?. W. Parker, Esq., Jl.ll.) LAIICKXY. Alfred Hoskins was charged with stealing a revolver, the properfcy of Mr. George 'Greenfield, valued at 305.. George Greenfield, auctioneer, deposed -that he : "recognised the pistol produced. .He received it twelve rrpnths ago from Mr.;; Longford for sale. He had possession' of it £or;about six fir eight rnqnths. He saw it about threg sr . four jnpnths ago ip his auction- "mart; He not authorise" anyone to to take ; it away,'rior had he sold it. Accused was, never in his employmeni>—he _ was_ acting storeman for.Mr_ Clarke in witness'mart. \ v / ■
By prisoner—The initials on the pistol were not on it when ft was in my possession. He never had the pistol mended. Detective Livingstone deposed that it was reported to him on Saturday last that the pistol had been stolen from Mr. Greenfield's auction mart. He saw the pistol produced in accused's house on Saturday. On Sunday he asked -the wife of accused to let him have the pistol. She gave it to him, and witness" took it to Mr. Greenfield, who identified it. v Inspector Thompson-asked for a remand, as as the accused appeared anxious to have the case remanded for the production of witnesses, his Worship said he had no objection, and he would therefore allow it to stand over till Thursday next.
