RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT.
THIS DAY. (13ei"oie T. W. I'aiikkr, Esq., R.M.) LARCENY. John Madden and Andrew Black were charged with having, at Oamaru yesterday, stolen a gold chain of the value of L 7, the property of one Thomas Edmund Davidson. The prisoners were remanded until tomorrow. VAGRANCY, Isabela Johnston, alias Campbell, alias Morrison, was again brought up on a charge of vagrancy, and remanded until to-morrow. SLY GROG CASES. The case against Jessie Davies for selling liquor without a license, adjourned from yesterday, was again brought up. The particulars of the case appeared in our yesterday's issue. After a considerable amount of argument between Messrs. O'Meagher and Newton on two points of law raised by latter, His Worship dismissed the case on the ground that evidence had not been adduced to prove that defendant was not licensed. Margaret Dale was charged with having sold a quantity of whiskey to one James Spence, on the 20th inst, contrary to the provisions of the Licensing Ordinance. Mr. O'Meagher prosecuted, and Mr. Hislop appeared for the defendant and pleaded guilty, The facts were somewhat similar to those in the previous case. His .Worship said no boarding-house keeper in Oamaru co'uld be unaware of the law as regarded selling liquor without a licence. Taking into consideration that this was defendant's first offence, and the fact that she had pleaded guilty, he would inflict a fine of Lls, to be paid, forthwith or recoved by distress warrant, faiKng which'to undergo a term of imprisonment not exceeding three months. John Lawson and Margaret Stuart, charged with the same offence, were each fined Lls with the same alternative. The case against Isabella Wilson wa3 remanded till Thursday,
