MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present, His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Mainland, Gibbs, and Headland. Minutes of the previous meeting, and also of a special meeting, were read and confirmed. A letter was read from M essrs - Cargills, Gibbs, and Co., Dunedin, with reference to floating the loan of L 40 3 0Q0 for the Waterworks. The Olark to the Waitaki Road Board wrote, with reference to the bridge over the water-race at Georgetown," stating that the Board had not complained of the site of the bridge, but had merely urged that the bridge which was only 12 feet wide, was not sufficient for the traffic on so important a public road. The writer concluded by expressing a hope that the Council would instruct its engineer to have the bridge constructed of sufficient width to meet the requirements of the district. .

Permission was given for the transfer of the, lease of section 20, block XXXV., from Mr, F. Bicknell to Mr. B. Grave, and of section 2, block LXXXVUI., from Mrs. Glassett to Mr. F. Earle. The matter had been referred to arbitrators, but they had not come to any decision, and it was -decided that the Mayor be authorised to obtain the services of an expert' to report as to whether any, and, if so, what damage had been'done to' Mr. Grant's property through the Waterworks, and that Messrs. Hislop and Creagh be informed that the Council are making inquiries into the facts of the case, and will communicate with them as early as possible. Oamara, May 23, 1879. To His Worship the Mayor and Councillors; Gentlemen,—l have the honor to report that, according to the request of the Council, I visited Reserve J), and could not find that Samuel Linton had destroyed the reserve fence in any way, but that he had removed put buildings which had formed part of the fence, apd after so doing erected five wires in the'place of the buildings, and so far. as I can learn the dispute avose from, Gavin Paterson's eattle trespassing on S,' Linton's sections and being impounded by

him, the cattle obtaining access to Linton's sections, through sections owned by Mr Bee. I also beg respectfully to bring under your notice that the surface water from part of block XXXTIL, which drains through section 1, and falls on to Avon-street; also the drainage from Mr. Bennett's premises, partly remains there and becomes very offensive. I would beg to that a small culvert be put in, and a channel a foot, .deep be cut through block XXX., in N a istraight line to the grating'in'Test-street,-immediately below, which would abate the nuisance..—l am, &c., Arthur Toms. It was resolved that the accounts "as read be passed for payment, provided that they were signed by another member of the Finance Committee. A petition was presented by Councillor 'Headland from a number of residents in "Wharf-street, calling the attention of the Council to the disgraceful state of 1 , the footpath on the west side of KlD ;arf-street,-from Wansbeck to Arun-streets. It was decided to gravel the places named. His Worship the Mayor then brought up tfie • question of the Railway "Department having partly arranged to give a lease_.of the_ rail way reserve in Tyne'-street, as mentioned in Mr. Lees' letter to the Harbor Board.
