RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS DAY. (liefo.-e T. \V. Parkkr, Esq., R.M.) Edward Williams, a man of not a very prepossessing appearance, was charged with haying stolen a bottle containing a curiosity from the shop of Mr, H. H. Coggins, chemist, Itchen-street. Mr. H. H. Coggina deposed that he saw the prisoner in his shop last evening about 7 o'clock. He asked for a sedlitz powder. Witness asked him if he was going to pay for it, and he said he would call in the morning and pay. Witness told him he gave no credit. Witness' assistant came in between 0 and 10 o'clock the same evening, and showed him a hottje (produced), which lie identified as his property. Witness did not miss the bottle until he saw it in his assistant's hands. George Newey, landlord of the Imperial Hotel, deposed that he was in the bar last evening, and saw prisoner in the passage. He asked witness if he would purchase a boct'e. Witness asked prisoner •what it was, and the latter said he would take 2s for it. Witness took the bottle into the parlor, and showed it to Mr. Lord, who said it belonged to Mr. Coggins, and asked witness where he got it. Prisoner said he got it from a ship. F. Lord, assistant to Mr. Covins, stated that he was in the Imperial Hut el, and was shown a specimen of a barnacle in a bottle, wluch he recognised as

belonging to his employer, to whom ho at once gave nnt 'ci\ Prisoner made a statement to the effect that he was intoxicated at the time, and did not know anything about it. His Worship said the plea of intoxication put forth was rather well worn out, and he had no doubt, the whole all'/ir was premeditated, and sentenced the prisoner to 30 days' imprisonment, with hard labor. David Lynch was broughtjup on remand charged with having stolen a pocket-book and two LI notes, and was sentenced to 10 days' imprisonment. Ellen M'Nab, for allowing 11 cws to be at large on the iJOth uft., was fined 4fs.
