EXCELSIOR CRICKET CLUB.

The season which has just been brought to a close has been a very successful one for this Club. Only one defeat was sustained —the return match with the Oamaru Club, and there was very little to boast about in that, for the game was a. very close one. The batting averages, which we give below, are very creditable, more especially when we consider that the Club is composed of young players. The bowling averages are really good, but it must of course in truth be said that the batsmen who opposed the Club's trundles were not always first-class. Four bats were given for competition during the season—two for batting and two for bowling—the stipulation being that twelve innings were to be played to entitle anyone to the trophies. The first bat, for batting, has been obtained by EL Snow, with an average of 13.5 for 15 innings, this result being mainly attributable to the splendid innings played by him in the first match against the Oamaru Club. C. W. Cooke takes the second, with 11.4, his average having also been greatly improved by one innings of over half a century. Marshall stands third on the list, with an average of <J to his credit. G. Fenwick obtains the first bat for bowling, with an average of 3 runs per wicket, and Cooke again takes the second, with an average of 3.3, which, seeing that he has bowled a much larger number of balls, and has taken part in more matches, must be looked upon as even a better performance than Fenwick's. Altogether, we may fairly congratulate the Club on the successful beginning it has made, and we hope to see them in possession of a better ground next season than that on which they played during the first.
